Just a little reminder about the second session of Monday's English Discussion Club (6/27)

2022年6月26日 22時44分 [杉村 文]

Good evening~

I would like to remind you, folks, of the second session of the English Discussion Club on Monday, June 27th.

I didn't upload the registration form this time, knowing that during the last session, quite a few participants dropped by, and we had a good time together just like this.

Please feel free to join tomorrow!

The main topic will be “What does it mean to be (or to work hard to be) a bilingual/multilingual in our world where English is the lingua franca?”.

After a brief introduction, we'll watch a short Ted-Ed video on bilingualism. You can also check the video beforehand.

Mia Nacamulli: The benefits of a bilingual brain | TED Talk

https://www.ted.com/talks/mia_nacamulli_the_benefits_of_a_bilingual_brain

This time, after watching the video, all the participants will be divided into smaller groups and are encouraged to think about questions regarding multilingualism with other group members.

Here are the questions (topics) for discussion:

What do you think about the video? What are the main messages?

Everyone in the club is, to some extent, bilingual (at least, you can use your mother tongue and English). Have you ever felt the benefits of having a “bilingual brain”?

If you could be bilingual (or multilingual) in any languages of your choice, which languages would you choose? And why?

What are the pros and cons of sparing extra time and energy for learning “second foreign languages (第二外国語)" when you need to improve your English the most?

After the group activity, we'll return to the main room and share our opinions. If we have time, let's think about how to learn several foreign languages simultaneously, effectively, and with a lot of fun.

Please come and enjoy the discussion!

See you tomorrow☺
