Hello, everyone!
I'm Fumi, a first-year master's student from the Graduate School of Letters. This semester, too, I'm in charge of the English Discussion Club on Monday during lunchtime.
The Club's first session will take place on Monday, October 17th. Of course, you are free to drink or eat during the Zoom meeting (though we won't be able to enjoy the meal together😢).
I hope to greet a lot of participants, new and old, to the upcoming sessions!
From this semester on, I'll make all the announcements bilingual. That is to say, everything I need to tell you all I'll write here both in Japanese and English since most of the previous participants was native speakers of Japanese.
For the time being, we'll only have online sessions, but I promise to make sure that every one of you will have plenty of time to speak and share your opinions with us.
Soon I'll post a Google Form Questionnaire. If you feel like joining the Club this semester, or just the first session, please write your answers and send me the Form.
And if you have questions or comments, or if you need any special care or attention, you could also contact me by email. You'll find my contact details in the Google Form.
Hope to see you soon in the first sessions☺
Good evening~
I would like to remind you, folks, of the second session of the English Discussion Club on Monday, June 27th.
I didn't upload the registration form this time, knowing that during the last session, quite a few participants dropped by, and we had a good time together just like this.
Please feel free to join tomorrow!
The main topic will be “What does it mean to be (or to work hard to be) a bilingual/multilingual in our world where English is the lingua franca?”.
After a brief introduction, we'll watch a short Ted-Ed video on bilingualism. You can also check the video beforehand.
Mia Nacamulli: The benefits of a bilingual brain | TED Talk
https://www.ted.com/talks/mia_nacamulli_the_benefits_of_a_bilingual_brain
This time, after watching the video, all the participants will be divided into smaller groups and are encouraged to think about questions regarding multilingualism with other group members.
Here are the questions (topics) for discussion:
・What do you think about the video? What are the main messages?
・Everyone in the club is, to some extent, bilingual (at least, you can use your mother tongue and English). Have you ever felt the benefits of having a “bilingual brain”?
・If you could be bilingual (or multilingual) in any languages of your choice, which languages would you choose? And why?
・What are the pros and cons of sparing extra time and energy for learning “second foreign languages (第二外国語)" when you need to improve your English the most?
After the group activity, we'll return to the main room and share our opinions. If we have time, let's think about how to learn several foreign languages simultaneously, effectively, and with a lot of fun.
Please come and enjoy the discussion!
See you tomorrow☺
Hi, everyone!
I'm happy to inform you that ten motivated people joined our English Discussion Club today.
Dear participants, I hope you enjoyed today's session!
As the Club is held during the lunch break, when everyone is busy eating or preparing for the next class, I know it's hard for most students to make time for such an extracurricular activity.
Thank you for coming despite all the challenges.
I sincerely appreciate your willingness and efforts.
And of course, new participants are always welcome!
If you have time, please come to the next session, which will take place on Monday, June 27th (12:10-12:50).
Lastly, I have a message for today's participants.
Some of you may be worried about your English skills, but everyone spoke very clearly, and I understood everything you said without any difficulty.
I hope that the Club will be an opportunity for all of you to realize that your English is actually good, and with some more practice, it will eventually be great.
Also, if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, don't hesitate to contact me at any time (you can find my e-mail address in the Vocabulary list sheet that I uploaded).
I'm looking forward to your participation!
Fumi
Hi, here's a short vocabulary list for tomorrow's session.
If there are any other words you want to learn, please let me know.
Vocabulary List for 6. 20 Club (Fumi).pdf
What we are going to do tomorrow is:
①Self-introduction and free talk
②Q&A session
・What languages have you ever learned?
・Do you like learning a new language? What do you like most about learning languages, and what do you find most challenging?
・For what purposes do you learn languages?
・What are your favourite methods of learning languages?
・What did you do to improve your language skills during the pandemic?
・Did the Covid-19 pandemic change how you communicate in your mother tongue and foreign languages?
・Do you have any “tips” for learning languages without going abroad?
※I'll ask more questions, maybe less, depending on the number of participants.
③Watch a short video (TED-Ed) on language learning and exchange our impressions or thoughts
See you tomorrow ☺
Hello☺
Here's the registration form for our first session on June 20th.
I'd really appreciate it if you could fill in the form before participation.
I got the idea of using Google Form from Megumi-san, who is the leader of Tuesday's Club (Thanks a lot!)
Of course, you can join the Zoom meeting without registration.
Hope to see you soon!
Fumi
Hi, everyone!
Welcome to English Discussion Club (Monday's session)!"
I'm Fumi Sugimura, a second-year master's student at the Graduate School of Letters, Department of Contemporary History. Just remember me as Fumi.
Besides spending three days in the UK, I have never studied in Anglophone countries.
After I got into Kyoto University, I gradually improved my conversation and discussion skills in English by taking many E2 courses and through tutoring sessions with international students.
The first session of Monday's club will be held on June 20th, during lunchtime via Zoom.
Please feel free to join, even if you cannot stay until the end.
I'm really looking forward to seeing you all!
The topic of discussion/conversation will be “What Are the Best Ways to Learn Foreign Languages during Covid-19?"
After a short self-introduction, we'll share our experiences and tips on learning English and other languages during the pandemic.
If you are very fluent in English (or are a native English speaker), please help the other participants and me with your advice.
And if you don't yet feel comfortable expressing yourself in English, please participate in the discussion/conversation at your pace.
Just be yourself and enjoy the session!
I'll upload the vocabulary list by the end of this week.
Please look forward to the first session!
Welcome to the English Discussion Club!
